This training DVD is produced by the Health Management Institute of Ireland, in partnership with the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists. The 30 minute DVD:

• describes safer people handling practices
• features specialist guidance from a chartered physiotherapist

Infection Control Nurses have strongly endorsed the contribution of the Standard Precautions in the Irish healthcare setting (Hospital, Ireland) as a tool for training all staff in best practice on standard precautions for infection prevention and control. A typical response was: “The DVD was used at all levels, within all areas of the hospital for orientation and updates in Infection Control. It saves a lot of education time. [It is] most valuable.”

Users were even more positive now that they have been able to integrate it into their day-to-day work.

The survey looked for responses to nine statements and was based on a five-point scale ranging from Strongly Disagree (1.0) to Strongly Agree (5.0).

Just as encouraging as the scores, were the free form comments which show us that the DVD is fast becoming the tool of choice for training staff in the prevention and control of healthcare associated infection.

Although the survey identified the strength of the product on all dimensions, it has helped us to identify those areas where there are some opportunities for improvement.

The overall results have given us great encouragement to move forward with new products. We take the results as an endorsement of the excellent work by everyone involved in developing the product.  It is also an endorsement of the expertise and cooperation of the many experts – infection control nurses, microbiologists and hospital staff – who worked with us at all stages in the development of the Hospital Edition DVD.

The most valued feedback we received came from one user who said,

Shaping a more cost effective and cost efficient health service delivery is the major challenge and calls for leadership of the highest order.  Any resulting reform must be radical and cannot be built on a service model that is no longer fit for purpose, believes President of Health Management Institute of Ireland (HMI) Richard Dooley.

Leading speakers, who are shaping the health services here and abroad, will discuss with delegates the policies, processes and practices which have proven successful at a day long conference tomorrow Monday October 3rd in Farmleigh.  The Conference is organised by the HMI.

Topics under discussion at the Inaugural Annual Conference in Farmleigh House include “New Policies…New Practices”.  What policy imperatives will shape strategic decision making? What can we learn from developments in funding and service delivery across Europe?

‘The Challenge for Managers’ in bringing about the changes which are required will also be examined.  What leadership competencies are required? What breakthrough strategies will deliver results? What strategic investments should now be planned to enable delivery of the change required?

Ongoing and formalised professional development of managers is the strategic investment now required to ensure service solutions for the future that meet the needs of our patients, the requirements of Government and that can be sustained
